PAN means Permanent Account Number. It is a ten digit alphanumeric unique number, issued by an Assessing Officer of the Income Tax Department. It is mandatory to quote PAN on return of income, all correspondence with any income tax authority for any payments due to Income Tax Department. If you want to submit Income tax returns you must quote a PAN. PAN number has to be produced if the deposit amount was Rs.50,000 or over in a Bank. It is also useful for your personal photo ID proof.
